Catholic Relief Services

Catholic Relief Services is an anti-poverty, emergency relief program of the United States Bishops. The American Bishops Overseas Appeal, one of the efforts of CRS, is an annual collection held the third Sunday of Lent. CRS provides local grants which are distributed and monitored through the Diocesan Office of Advocacy and Justice.

Model of Hope

Eric_Akoth_002Eric Akoth experienced first hand the devastation of AIDS when his parents along with six aunts and uncles died from the disease. He dropped out of school to raise his younger siblings and cousins, but they were unable to secure basic necessities until Catholic Relief Services stepped in. The international relief agency helped his family by providing food, educational opportunities and shelter. Akoth visited the Diocese of Orlando on May 14 along with Stephen Gichuki, also from Kenya, to explain how CRS is helping children left orphaned by AIDS. More than 12 million children have been orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Money collected in the Diocese of Orlando allows CRS to provide hope for a better life.

  • Participate in Operation Rice Bowl, a sacrificial giving program. Money collected are used to address hunger locally and globally. Of the money collected, 25% stays within our diocese.
  • Plan a Food Fast for your youth group. Food Fast, a 24 hour fast, has been developed in a way that helps our children connect with those suffering from poverty. Learn to live their faith, and begin to create lasting change in our world.
  • Host a CRS Fair Trade Café or use Fair Trade products at your parish and home to help disadvantaged artisans, farmers, and farmworkers receive fair compensation for the goods they produce.
