SmilePak – Healthy Food for Hungry Children
To help combat child hunger in Polk County by bridging the weekend hunger gap.
The SmilePak Pantry & Backpack Program is a weekend meal program created to help the neediest of students who are at risk of suffering hunger over the weekends. With nearly 70% of children in Polk County receiving free or subsidized lunches, leaving school on Friday may mean not eating again until they return to school on Monday. SmilePak helps bridge the hunger gap that exists over the weekend when free school lunches are not available by providing backpacks filled with food to needy schoolchildren in Polk County. SmilePak was developed by Agape Food Bank, a program of Catholic Charities of Central Florida.
SmilePak began in January 2012 through an anonymous donation from a Polk County Catholic church parishioner who wished to feed local hungry children.
