Natalie Mevs, Emergency Family Services Case Manager meets with Karen Myers to help her apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Thanks to a grant from the Walmart Foundation, we are expanding our efforts to educate families about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Brevard counties. The $43,000 grant, provided through Catholic Charities USA, will provide enrollment assistance to help families sign up for SNAP benefits, understand their benefits and guide them through the process of receiving benefits.

“This grant means more people in need will be able to provide nutritious and healthy meals to their families,” said Heather Knoop, Emergency Family Services Program Manager.

Our Emergency Family Services focuses on caring for the immediate needs of a family or individual including emergency food or financial support. The program also provides case management services designed to help people like Karen Myers find self-sufficiency and reduce food insecurity.

Myers came to Catholic Charities for help reapplying for SNAP benefits. She was living at a friend’s house to save money, but with a low paying job she was still struggling to buy groceries each week. During her visit with a case manager, we helped her reapply for SNAP benefits and apply for a higher paying job.

“She was so relieved when her SNAP application was approved. The job search continues, but it’s an incredible experience to be a part of the ministry that helps renew hope in others and walk with people on their journey to self-sufficiency,” said Natalie Mevs, Emergency Family Services Case Manager.

Feeding America reports that one in six people living in Florida struggle with hunger. Support from the Walmart Foundation will help us to close this gap through outreach, enrollment assistance and recertification of benefits.
