Watch out for immigration scams

Dear Community Members of the Diocese of Orlando,

Catholic Charities of Central Florida (CCCF) and the Diocese of Orlando are aware of multiple immigration legal service scams that use Catholic Charities’ name to victimize vulnerable immigrants. Catholic Charities USA, along with more than 10 other local Catholic Charities’ (CC) agencies, are used in these scams by individuals purporting to be working on behalf of the CC agency noted to solicit fees for immigration assistance, all the while having no official connection at all. Individuals and CC agencies being used are victims of these scams. Scammers are claiming immigrants are being enrolled in non-existent programs and are pushed to send fees or donations.

Please be aware of the following:

  1. Any client, potential client, or community member receiving solicitation from any “Catholic Charities organization” should contact their local Catholic Charities
    agency to discuss the solicitation.
  2. Catholic Charities of Central Florida does not request payment for legal services via applications like WhatsApp or Zelle. No payments should be sent via these types of applications. Any payment for immigration legal services is subject to confirmation by the purported Catholic Charities office.
  3. Victims of scams in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Marion, Lake, Volusia, Brevard, Polk, and Sumter counties are encouraged to notify Catholic Charities of Central Florida (email legalservices@cflcc.org or call (407) 658-0110) after becoming aware of immigration legal service scams.
  4. Concerned individuals may contact the Orange County Bar Association (407) 422-4551 to inquire on resources as to unauthorized practice of immigration law (UPIL) or “notario” fraud. The Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC) has a resource page on “notario” fraud.

Caridades Católicas de la Florida Central y la Diócesis de Orlando están conscientes de varias estafas de servicios legales de inmigración que utilizan el nombre de Caridades Católicas para victimizar a inmigrantes vulnerables. Caridades Católicas de Estados Unidos, junto a más de 10 agencias locales de Caridades Católicas (CC) han sido utilizadas por individuos que pretenden representar a nuestras agencias solicitando pagos para asistencia de inmigración. Aunque estos estafadores no tienen ninguna conexión oficial a nuestras organizaciones, pretenden registrar a inmigrantes en programas falsos y solicitan pagos por ello. Sus estafas victimizan a individuos y a nuestras agencias.

Por favor, manténgase alerta de lo siguiente:

  1. Cualquier cliente, futuro cliente o miembro comunitario que reciba una solicitud de una “agencia de CC” debe contactar directamente a su agencia local de CC para discutir la solicitud y verificar su autenticidad.
  2. Caridades Católicas de la Florida Central nunca solicita pagos por servicios legales a través de WhatsApp o Zelle. Ningún pago se debe enviar por medio de estas aplicaciones.
  3. Víctimas de estas estafas en los condados de Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Marion, Lake, Volusia, Brevard, Polk y Sumter pueden informar a Caridades Católicas de la Florida Central acerca de estas estafas de servicios de inmigración.   4.
